The Papua New Guinea prime minister, Sir Michael Somare and the Acting Governor-General, Bill Skate have released condolence messages to the family of the late Sir Anthony Siaguru.

Sir Anthony, former deputy secretary of the Commonwealth Secretariat and founding chairman of Transparaency International, died on Friday after a long illness.

Sir Anthony has been described by leaders as a great man, a warrior of truth and a man with christian values.

However our correspondent, Peter Niesi says the condolence messages have a touch of irony to them.

"Sir Anthony disdains the idea of condolence messages, in his role as Transparency International chairman, he has seen what he feels to be wasted, whenever a PNG leader dies, and a lot of the government departments and corporations take out full-page, half-page advertisements to express condolences, which he has felt, is something that he doesn't favour, as a wise use of public money."
