There is a call in Fiji to return to the policies of the former president, Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara.
The chairman of the Great Council of Chiefs, Ratu Epeli Ganilau, says Ratu Mara's commitment to multi-racialism is the only way for the country to prosper, and history has shown that problems arise otherwise.
Ratu Epeli says the coups of 1987 and 2000 greatly disappointed the late Ratu Mara, who he says felt betrayed.
There are allegations that the former president was tricked into leaving office during the 2000 coup in circumstances that are still being investigated.
Ratu Epeli says Fiji needs to embrace multi-racialism.
"This is the only way we can progress as a nation is to embrace everyone and that no one community should be looked upon at the expense of another."
I think that rings very true, you know, his policies in the end were tested and he was right. It has proved that this is the only way to go and this is the key to the prosperity of Fiji.
