Two candidates for Papua New Guinea's vacant Governor-General's post have secured the 16 signatures of members of parliament for their candidatures to proceed.

Sir Paulias Matane returned his completed form on Wednesday, the day after parliament convened to declare the post vacant.

Press reports say his completed proposal form was followed by one from Sir Pato Kakaraya containing seventeen signatures .

It was presented to the Clerk of the House yesterday.

Thirteen candidates have announced they will seek the post but not all are expected to gain the required sixteen signatures to qualify for the race.
