There's outrage in Fiji following a report that 13 unclaimed dead babies were incinerated at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva last month.

The Fiji Times has reported the hospital had to dispose of the dead babies in the incinerator to make room for more bodies in the mortuary.

It says this has been normal procedure in the past when parents did not collect the bodies of dead babies for three months.

The President of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, the Reverend Tom Osbourne, says he horrified by the medical professionals' actions.

"Basically I'm totally against what the ministry of health has done in regards to the babies being incinerated, totally against it. I personally feel it's inhuman, unchristian and I think those babies deserve a proper funeral, proper burial."

Reverend Tom Osbourne says he believes most of the babies are a result of unwanted pregnancies.

The Hospital would not comment today.
