A clan of chiefly lineage in Fiji has offered a public apology for comments made in parliament by their high chief and the leader of the pro-coup Conservative Alliance party.
Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, who is also the lands minister, said last week that the military should make a traditional apology for its part in the removal of the late Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara from the presidency during the coup.
But the Fiji Sun reports that a spokesman for the clan known as Valelevu Aisokula of Taveuni has called on Ratu Naiqama to carry out a check of his mental ability.
The spokesman says they are apologising for his remarks because they do not agree with what Ratu Naiqama said.
