Cook Islands Democratic Party appears to confirm nomination

Eugene Tatuava looks to have won the Cook Islands Democratic Party nomination for the Tengatangi-Areora-Ngatiarua constituency in Atiu, at the expense of sitting MP Norman George.

The issue was discussed when the party's leadership met yesterday on the eve of their conference.

Following the meeting Party president Iaveta Short said the question of who should represent a constituency is a matter for the constituents rather than others in the party.

That appeared to indicate that the party's earlier decision to endorse Tatuava as the candidate had been accepted.

Mr Short said that the committee looking into the issue of who should stand in the seat had accepted the report of party secretary-general Aporo Dean, who found that Mr Tatuava had the numbers to get the nomination.
