Papua New Guinea police say the Governor of West Sepik shot and wounded his wife during a domestic argument this week.

The Post Courier reports Carlos Yuni is yet to be arrested and charged, as police are awaiting a statement from the Governor's wife, Jennifer Yuni, and medical reports.

The provincial police commander, Joe Poema, has confirmed the shooting incident and said Mrs Yuni had to be taken to the Boram Hospital in Wewak for an emergency operation.

According to police the couple had argued in their home after which Mr Yuni allegedly shot his wife in the upper right thigh with a pistol.

She was taken to hospital in Vanimo, but had to be flown to Wewak for the operation to take out the bullet, which was still lodged in her body.
