The Clerk of the Papua New Guinea parliament says nominations for the vacant Governor-General position should be called for by Wednesday.

Attempts to fill the post have been unsuccessful over the past six months and in the latest twist the clerk, Ano Pala, rejected all four candidates because of defects in the application forms.

"There's no limits required but we must have a governor-general so if the process keeps being deferred or being challenged we'll keep on going until a governor-general is elected. You never know somebody might challenge the next governor-general after he's elected but hopefully we won't come to that."
