New Caledonia's separatists concede strategic election error

The Palika party of New Caledonia's pro-independence FLNKS says the movement made a mistake in not putting up a single list in the Southern Province.

Elections on Sunday saw the separatists, who put up three lists in the European dominated province, lose all of their elected representatives there.

Pro-independence candidates did well in the mainly Kanak northern province and in the Loyalty Islands, but Charles Wea, the Palika spokesman, says it was a mistake to field three lists in the south.

"If we made one list only instead of three I think we can have six deputies in the South Province. I think it was an error, it was a mistake where we made the negotiations between Palika and the UC [Caledonian Union] to make one list. From that mistake we have to think and to realise that the next time we don't have to make that same mistake."

Charles Wea says it is hard to predict the future shape of the Government but the various factions of the FLNKS must now hold talks to decide how they can be most effective in the future.
