Papua New Guinea's parliament has unanimously passed a constitutional amendment outlawing the appointment of people to statutory bodies through nepotism or political cronyism.
All appointments of Chief Executive Officers and non ex-officio members of boards of those bodies will now be merit-based and vetted by the Public Service Commission.
All 76 members in the House supported the measure.
Public Service Minister, Peter O'Neill, said the new law complements changes to the Public Service Management Act passed by parliament last year.
He says the passing of the law, which also applies to temporary postings confirms the government's commitment to transparency and accountability in the appointments system.
