The Fijian Political Party, the SVT, is demanding police investigations into allegations that members of the junior partner in the governing coalition, the Conservative Alliance Matanitu Vanua, wanted the army commander, Commodore Bainimarama, overthrown.

The allegations have been made by the executive director of the Citizens Constitutional Forum, the Rev Aquila Yabaki.

Rev Yabaki says one of the five senior suspended officers at the centre of the current controversy came to his house and disclosed the approach by the Conservative Alliance.

The Fiji Sun quotes the SVT spokesperson, Ema Druavesi, as saying the party is concerned that the innocence and commitment of ordinary Fijians is being exploited by self-centered politicians greedy for power.

She says Commodore Bainimarama had made a commitment to see that people implicated in the coup and mutiny are brought to justice, including those holding ministerial positions in the current government.

Mrs Druavesi says ordinary Fijians need to be protected from inhuman and degrading political manoevering aimed at inflaming their feelings and causing instability.

She is calling on police to investigate.
