PNG by-elections proceed smoothly

2:26 pm on 24 May 2004

Papua New Guinea's electoral commissioner says polling has progressed well in the first of three by-elections using the new Limited Preferential Voting system.

Andrew Trawen says that voting was completed without incident throughout the Anglimp South Wahgi electorate on Saturday.

Polling has also started in Yangoru Saussia electorate and the first of the six sub-electorates of Chimbu Province.

Mr Trawen says although most of the electoral teams were late arriving at the polling stations in Anglimp, the new LPV system has been successful.

"No major problems despite the few hiccups, the delays in getting the teams into locations, the high number of policemen or security personnel prevented the high number of double voting or triple voting or so on."
