Papua New Guinea's ombudsman's commission has ordered the speaker, Bill Skate, to resume and perform the functions, duties and responsibilities of the acting Governor-General.

The directions came after Mr Skate created a constitutional crisis when he relinquished his responsibilities as acting Governor-General to pursue the political role.

Mr Skate's People's National Congress party had been dumped by the Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare.

The order by the ombudsman commission has come ahead of today's planned parliamentary meeting to choose a new governor general.

Earlier attempts to elect a replacement for Sir Silas Atopare were annulled.

Today's planned session comes amid government instability.
