French Polynesia presidency won't rule out poll recount

The spokesperson for French Polynesia's President, Gaston Flosse, says they may ask for a recount following the close election earlier this week.

His Tahoeraa Huiraatira party is one seat short of a majority to retain power, with 28 seats against the 27, of the main opposition party, the Tavini Huiraatira party.

Two other parties, No Oe E Te Nunaa party and Fetia Api party, both won single seats in the 57-seat Assembly.

Mr Flosse's spokesman, Yves Haupert, says it's still to early to decide whether they'd like to see the votes recounted.

"We've just come out of the vote, so I think the time is too short, but this is a possibility, yes, also for us, and also for the opposition, to ask to recount, but I think there is nothing, there is no contestation about the result."
