Fiji PM unmoved on portfolios for Labour

7:39 am on 1 June 2004

Fiji's prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, says he won't change the portfolios he offered to the Labour Party last year to bring it into a multi-party cabinet.

Radio Legend reports that Mr Qarase has taken this position in an affidavit on the Labour Party's further legal case against the prime minister.

In the case, Labour has accused the prime minister of not negotiating in good faith, on the grounds that the cabinet portfolios offered are minor and demeaning to Labour.

Mr Qarase says, in the affidavit he's filed in response, that he's already made his decision on the allocation of portfolios, and the nomination of people to take up those responsibilities.

Mr Qarase says he did this after consulting the Labour leader, Mahendra Chaudhry, but Mr Chaudry didn't respond positively.
