New Georgia landowners call for end to logging

10:32 am on 1 June 2004

Land owners of Buinituzu island in the Marovo Lagoon of Western province in Solomon Islands support the suspension of logging operations on New Georgia.

A landowner, Ossy Pitu describes the suspension of the logging licence of Oceania Trading Company by the Forestry Department as having come too late, but a step in the right direction.

Mr Pitu says the suspension paves the way for proper investigations on alleged irregularities by the logging company.

Mr Pitu alleges that logging operations by the company on New Georgia over the last three years were done without a timber rights hearing as required by the Forestry Act.

He says the delay by the Department of Forestry to act quickly in suspending the company's operations license has incurred to big loss of income for landowners.
