The Cook Islands Broadcasting Corporation board is requesting assistance from New Zealand over the drafting of guidelines for media standards.
A member of the newly-created board, Florence Syme Buchanan, says they want to see the Broadcasting Act updated in time to be operational before elections are held in late August or early September.
She says they've asked the New Zealand Broadcasting Standards Authority for expert legal advice which it has indicated it's willing to provide if funding is available.
"We're very anxious to see broadcasting standards and a code of practice included in a new broadcasting act before the general elections are held later this year. Having these in place would ensure the observance of reporting ethic, good taste and decency during the campaign and post-election period, and a proper procedure put in place for complaints."

The government is expecting to hear this week whether it can proceed with a criminal libel case against the Pitt Media group over a satirical piece on the administration's One China policy.
