Skate named candidate in PNG power struggle

12:54 pm on 1 June 2004

The People's National Congress in Papua New Guinea has picked former Speaker Bill Skate for its candidate as alternate prime minister in the upcoming vote of no-confidence in the Government.

The National newspaper reports indications are that a no-confidence motion will be tabled when Parliament resumes on June 29th.

Other parties in the 45-strong opposition are also expected to name candidates as alternate prime ministers in the next two days.

A meeting of party leaders on Thursday will confirm the Opposition's candidate to challenge Sir Michael Somare for the top job.

An Opposition insider said last night that many Opposition MPs prefer a younger person to be its candidate.

Ten of the 13-strong PNC members were present for the party caucus which endorsed Mr Skate in a motion that was moved by Opposition leader Peter O'Neill.
