Forum Secretary General says finance ministers must work at greater accountability

The secretary-general of the Pacific Islands Forum says this week's meeting of forum economic ministers will be helpful in working towards greater accountability of governments in the region.

Greg Urwin says it's been a few years now since the economic ministers agreed to accountability principles that would ensure transparent government.

He hopes the gathering in Rotorua in New Zealand will highlight areas to work on.

"We're hoping that this time it's a rather more thorough stocktake, we're hoping that it will show up first of all what progress we've made, but secondly it might tell us something about the kinds of constraints that exist on island countries, in meeting some of those principles, and if those constraints exist, what are the ways of addressing them."
