Bleak picture of state of higher education in Marshall Islands

A long-time Marshall Islands educator has painted a bleak picture of higher education accomplishments of Marshall Islanders.

Former Secretary of Education, Hilda Heine, has told graduating high school students at Marshall Islands High School, that fewer than 25 Marshall Islanders have graduated from four year university courses in the past seven years.

Hilda Heine says this puts the Marshall Islands at the bottom in college graduation rates among its neighbours in the region, including the Federated States of Micronesia and Palau.

She said that despite the clear need for college-level training to compete in the job market, fewer than 130 Marshall Islands students are involved in tertiary education this year.
