10:52 am on 11 June 2004

A man was killed when a hand grenade he was showing a friend went off, outside a restaurant in Papua New Guinea.

Webster Mark, aged in his mid 20s, died instantly when the grenade exploded outside the Yumi Yet restaurant in Port Moresby yesterday.

The Port Moresby Police Commander Tony Wagambie says Mr Mark was attempting to pull the grenade out of his trousers when the pin became caught on his zipper.

Mr Mark's friend is being treated in Port Moresby General Hospital for shrapnel wounds.

The incident comes amid a national debate about the spread of illegal weapons.

The police minister Bire Kimisopa has called for a complete ban on firearms.
