Plans for tax on drink containers in American Samoa

7:15 am on 14 June 2004

The American Samoa Government is making another attempt to impose a tax drink cans and bottles.

Governor Togiola Tulafono plans to introduce a bill in July that would introduce a deposit for redeemable drink containers imported into the territory.

The governor said the tax is aimed at controlling rubbish.

This is about the third time that the legislature will consider such a bill.

Alcohol and soft drink importers have opposed previous legislation because they said that it imposes extra costs on their operations.
