Mounting rubbish problem in Marshall Islands

3:57 pm on 17 June 2004

Garbage is piling up in the Marshall Islands capital of Majuro, with nowhere to go.

The tractor used by Public Works for spreading out the rubbish at the Majuro dump has been broken since last week and the entrance to the dump is now clogged.

The dump will effectively be closed until the machine is repaired or replaced by other equipment.

The dump was supposed to close some months ago but has remained open because the Ministry of Public Works has not established a new landfill.

The Public Works Minister, Mattlan Zackhras, says design for a new landfill site is ready, but problems with Ministry equipment are holding up its preparation.
