Vanuatu Chairman of Chiefs threatens dismissal over Port Vila chiefs political move

Vanuatu's National Council of Chiefs has reiterated its threat to dismiss the Port Vila Chiefs Council for putting up candidates in next month's snap election without its permission.

The chairman of the National Council, Chief Paul Tahi has censured the chairman of the Vila Council, Jean Marie Leye, for getting involved in politics.

Chief Leye says the chiefs have a right to be involved in politics but Chief Tahi says the Vila Council chairman has stepped outside his responsibilities...

"IN: He was talking from other provinces too - that was not the duty of the Vila town council to do it. I mean, the National Council of Chiefs has not yet agreed for the Chiefs to enter in the fields of politic."

Chief Paul Tahi says the Vila council's dismissal will be considered at the National Council's next meeting.
