Conjoined Fiji twins die

8:45 pm on 25 June 2004

Fiji's first ever conjoined twins, who were born on Monday, have died of a cardiac problem in their hospital cot yesterday.

Preparations had been under way to take the twins to the Royal Melbourne Children's Hospital which had offered to do an operation to separate them.

But even if the operation had been successful, only one of the twins would have survived because they shared just one heart.

They had undergone surgery at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva only hours after their delivery because parts of the abdomen were open.
