Fiji government accused of trying to control Great Council chairman

The Citizens Constitutional Forum says the Fiji government wants the chairman of the Great Council of Chiefs, Ratu Epeli Ganilau, to be its puppet.

The CCF's executive director, the Rev Akuila Yabaki, says that is the reason for the information minister Simione Kaitani's attacks on Ratu Epeli this week over his public statements criticising government policy.

The FIJI SUN quotes the Rev Yabaki as saying a number of those who supported the May 2000 coup are now coming out in the open to take sides against Ratu Epeli.

He says the CCF has an Australian TV tape which shows Mr Kaitani standing beside George Speight and announcing to the media that he was Speight's information minister.

The Rev Yabaki says the CCF will be giving a copy of this tape as evidence to the police.
