Solomon Islands ports beef up security

10:33 am on 1 July 2004

The Solomon Islands sea ports in Honiara and Noro has begun implementing new security measures according to International Maritime Organisation requirements.

Solomon Islands radio reports the General Manager of the Ports Authority, Mr Ngenomea Kabui as saying the new measures are part of a global network to provide security and safety to counter any terrorism attack.

He says one of the new security measures to be introduced is clearing all movable objects from an overseas vessel and restrict entry into the ports compound.

Mr Kabui says failure to comply may have led to cuts in international shipping links.
