8:23 am on 8 July 2004

Three women and a man accused of practising witchcraft that resulted in the death of a woman, have appeared before a District Court in Papua New Guinea.

The Post Courier reports the courtroom was packed with spectators when the four defendants appeared to face charges of wilful murder under the Sorcery Act.

The defendants, from the remote Telefomin area in West Sepik Province, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The defendants were also denied bail because of fears for their safety.
