Official Vanuatu election results to be announced today

10:20 am on 15 July 2004

The Vanuatu Electoral Office is expected to officially announce the results of last week's election this morning.

The unofficial results show that nine parties and nine independents will share the 52 seats in the Parliament.

The two main parties, the Union of Moderate Parties headed by Serge Vohor, and caretaker Prime Minister Edward Natapei's Vanuaaku Pati, lost around half their members.

Mr Natapei, who called the early election to avoid a vote of no confidence, has also lost the support of two senior members, who are openly backing Serge Vohor to head the new Government.
