Fiji President cancels address on commission of inquiry into military chief

Fiji's president has cancelled a national broadcast scheduled for today on the proposed commission of inquiry to look into allegations against the army commander, Commodore Frank Bainimarama.

The cancellation was announced by the ministry of information which said a statement may be issued later.

President Iloilo had been expected to announce that, as commander-in-chief of the military, he would reject the government's commission of inquiry.

Earlier reports said the President's Office had sent a letter to the Prime Minister's Office on Monday saying it had withdrawn its support for an inquiry.

The president's official secretary, Paula Kunabuli, was quoted as saying President Iloilo had reached a decision on the commission of inquiry and "would address the nation today on very important matters."

The national security council, chaired by Mr Qarase, ordered an inquiry into allegations by three suspended officers that Commodore Bainimarama planned to overthrow the government.

It allegedly happened during a tense stand-off in December last year when government officials were strongly opposing a renewal of Commodore Bainimarama's term as commander to enable him to pursue coup and mutiny prosecutions.
