New Zealand's first Pacific Island Woman MP, says she will be able to bring a fresh perspective to a trade mission to the Pacific this week.

The delegation is visiting Fiji, Papua New Guinea and Guam to foster trade links between the Pacific and New Zealand.

The Trade Negotiations minister, Jim Sutton will leave the delegation in Fiji to attend a WTO meeting and Luamanuvao Winnie Laban will stand in for him.

Luamanuvao says it will also be good to lead a misson to PNG for the first time in 10 years.

"There's a lot of potential for that country because Melanesia is so lucky in contrast with Polynesia, so many more mineral resources. They're also very proud of being a part of our pacific region and I think the potential to go and visit them after ten years and to look at some economic strategies would be a good thing."
