Samoa Television is poised to offer two extra channels, perhaps as early as next month.

One will be funded by China, the other by Australia's ABC.

Samoa Television says the channel funded by China will will only be screening news and programmes from China's television station CC TV Nine.

China's ambassador, Liu Guauren, said the new channel would serve to promote and improve mutual understanding and communication.

Samoa Broadcasting Corporation, which consists of state television and radio, is earmarked for sale some time next year.

Applications for two privately-run television stations were recently approved by government.
