Man in Fiji impersonates FBI agent

10:20 am on 22 July 2004

Fiji police are investigating a man reported to have been impersonating an agent of the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Fiji TV reports that the man was making his way around Suva flashing a fake FBI identity card describing him as a special agent, and claiming he worked for the US embassy in the capital.

The police spokesman, Mesake Koroi, says a raid on the man's home's found several fake passports and photographs purporting show the man shaking the hands with US president George Bush.

Police checks found that the photos were computer generated.

The man is reported to have told people in Suva that he could obtain US visas for them if he was paid a cash fee.

Police were expected to lay charges against him soon.
