A man is dead and more than 80 people are without jobs after a fire destroyed a paper factory in the Fiji capital yesterday afternoon.

The dead man was trapped in the washroom as flames swept through the factory in minutes in the Suva industrial suburb of Vatuwaqa.

Firemen using three fire trucks were unable to contain the blaze which caused damage estimated in the millions.

Many of the jobless are reported to be the sole breadwinners in their families.

The factory was the main supplier of paper in Fiji and its destruction will leave many printing presses short of paper.
