Cook Islands Democratic party finalises campaign policies

1:07 pm on 3 August 2004

The Cook Islands Democratic party, which governs the country, is finalising its campaign policies today.

The party's campaign co-ordinator, Arthur Taripo, says these will include the return of the cost of living adjustment and fixed parliamentary sittings, as signalled by Democratic president, Makiuti Tongia.

Local media reports that last year, parliament sat for a total of 23 days between March and November, while this year it sat for ten days.

Mr Tongia said the Democratic party will introduce an annual calendar where parliament sits four times a year, for a minimum 15 days each quarter.

Mr Taripo says the policy is in response to public concerns.

"It's an issue with the public, the lack of parliamentary sittings but the reason why there's a lack of parliamentary sittings is because no-one has the numbers to be confident of getting their legislative programme through parliament. So, you're always safer if you go to parliament only when you have to, only when you absolutely have to."

Mr Taripo says the party will take a final look through the policies and they're likely to be made available for distribution early next week.
