Tokelau has received its first visit from a New Zealand Prime Minister in more than 20 years.

Tokelau is New Zealand's last remaining colony, and is taking the last steps towards near-independence.

Visiting the Tokelauan atoll of Fakaofu, Helen Clark announced nearly three hundred thousand US dollars towards improving boat access to the islands.

The new funding will almost double Tokelau's shipping resources.

Miss Clark also announced New Zealand would review the islands' communications infrastructure, to explore the feasibility of introducing digital technology.
