Papua New Guinea's Ombudsman Commission is to challenge the recent parliamentary adjournment in the Supreme Court.
The Post Courier newspaper quotes a senior lawyer from the Commission as saying the House's decision to adjourn from August 3rd till November 2nd meant that parliament would breach its constitutional duty to sit for 63 days in the parliamentary year.
The Commission earlier instituted proceedings in the Court when the government announced an adjournment from January 21st to June 29th but did not go to court after it thought parliament would sit through July in order to meet the 63 day requirement.
The lawyer says the government's continuing failure to meet the requirement would be pursued by asking the court to refer members who voted for the latest adjournment, for leadership misconduct.
