Jail inmates riot in Solomon Islands

3:42 pm on 10 August 2004

Police in Solomon Islands have declined comment about a prison riot which erupted in Honiara this morning.

A radio report said inmates threw stones and tore down part of a fence at the Rove maximum security prison in Honiara.

A prison service statement has confirmed that inmates broke out out of their cells but says they are confined within the jail complex.

The statement says a number of inmates are involved but gives no further details apart from saying that the situation poses no danger to the public.

The cause of the riot is not known but one report says the incident involved an argument among remand prisoners.
