A shortage of light meat tuna is forcing a major cannery in American Samoa to close for a week later this month, affecting about 2500 workers.
The general manager of Star Kist Samoa, Phil Thirkel, says the cannery will be closed the week of August the 23rd .
He says the supply of light meat tuna has not been comforting and the threat of a production closure has loomed for some time.
The Star Kist manager says they have a big supply contract for the US Government for August the 30th so the closure will preserve tuna stocks for this order.
The US order is for tuna for schools, hospitals and even prisons.
