2:35 pm on 13 August 2004

The Solomon Islands prime minister, Sir Allan Kemakeza, says the presence of the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands will depend on the police force returning to full normalcy.

He told a news conference in Honiara today that when the force can be fully restored, then consideration can be given to RAMSI's future.

Sir Allan says the police force is being redeveloped and restructured under RAMSI's assistance and signs of success are good.

He says Solomon Islands future depends on a strong and neutral police force.

Sir Allan says 99 percent of Solomon Islands population supports RAMSI's work.
