PNG police commissioner asserts command role over Australian deployment

6:14 am on 14 August 2004

The Papua New Guinea Police Commissioner Sam Inguba has said he'll be in command of all Australian police officers sent in an assistance mission to PNG.

Sam Inguba has told PNG radio that officers of the Enhanced Co-operation Programme come under his control.

A group of Australian Federal Police have flown to Madang for consultations with local officers.

The meetings are paving the way for the first deployment of Australian police to Bougainville, under the assistance mission to PNG, at the end of the month.

The foreign ministers of Australia and PNG yesterday signed off on final details of the Enhanced Co-Operation Programme.

The Australian Foreign Minister, Alexander Downer says the mission will be dangerous work, for the police.

The PNG Foreign Minister Sir Rabbie Namaliu says his people will welcome the Australian police.

But Sir Rabbie's pointed out some raskol gangs may put up a measure of resistance.

Sir Rabbie says however that people, particularly in the Highlands, want tough action to be taken.
