Cook Islands candidate stands by claims of a cover-up

An independent candidate in the Cook Islands election is standing by her claims that there's been a cover-up by the government over testing for environmental pollution in Titikaveka.

The tests, which have been going on for months, followed people complaining of irritation to the eyes, nose and throat.

Elizabeth Ponga says residents haven't been given information officially and the results of testing haven't been forthcoming.

"There's a general cover-up from everybody that's been given the job to look into it. That's Marine Resources, the Environment and other people. So, it's like pointing the finger at the next person and the next person, and then you have merry go round of people pointing fingers at each other."
