Papua New Guinea's Attorney-General, Francis Damem, says the Australian police and civil servants now arriving in the country should be a huge help in improving law and order.

He says PNG will get a new Australian Solicitor-General, with three Australian assistants, four judges and two policy advisers.

Mr Damem says the country now accepts the landmark assistance programme.

"It's a very sensitive thing but Papua New Guineans have accepted it after it has been explained in the various ways by the Government and by the bureacracy and at least the bureacracy fully appreciates the role that they will be playing because we have of course our own deficiencies and weaknesses in the system and lack of technical people and experienced people and this will be a plus for us."
