In the Western Province of Solomon Islands a 41-year-old man has been arrested by police on 37 charges relating to alleged sexual offences.
Martin Magiaro Muina, a former police man was arrested over the weekend on charges of rape, attempted rape, common assault, indecent assault and intimidation committed against five victims between the ages of 12 and 15 years of age.
The offences allegedly occurred between January 2003 and April 2004, while Muina was employed as a school teacher.
Acting Commissioner of Police, Sandy Piesly says the arrest is significant because at a time when the Solomon Islands is looking forward to a return to peace, there is no place for those who seek to remove from others their right to dignity and self-determination.
