Samoa set to move economic zone boundaries

8:22 am on 4 September 2004

Samoa is moving to set the boundaries of its exclusive economic zone, a move which would certainly involve talks with the US State Department.

The Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele, has told Parliament that the marine boundaries between Samoa and American Samoa need to be defined because of recent incidents, which he didn't give details on.

He indicated that whilst the issue will be on the agenda of the next inter-Samoa talks with American Samoa, Samoa would have to negotiate with the US State Department - as the territory doesn't handle international agreements.

The inter-Samoa talks are scheduled for the last week of November and officials from the two sides are putting an agenda together.
