Nauru to establish Select Committee to review constitution

8:35 am on 18 September 2004

The Parliament of Nauru is calling for suggestions on reframing its constitution.

A Select committee has been established to consider amendments to the cash-strapped nation's constitution.

The Constitutional Review Convention will consider submissions from the public, academics, and constitutional experts both from Nauru and overseas.

Nauru has been independent from Australia for 36 years, but the island's early prosperity owing to phosphate mining has waned.

The Pacific Islands Forum has sent a former Nauruan secretary to government on a 12-month mission to the island.

The Forum Secretary general Greg Urwin says Chitra Jeremiah has been sent to look at changes in the Nauru's administration.
