Solomon Islands readies for poll on North Malaita

9:15 am on 25 September 2004

The Solomon Islands Electoral Commission says it's seeking security advice from the Regional Assistance Mission and police for the by-election in North Malaita.

The chief electoral officer Martin Karani says the recent reports claiming fugitives are hiding in the highlands of North Malaita are being taken seriously by the commission to ensure the by-election planned for October is safe and fair.

However, Mr Karani says so far the commission hasn't experienced any problems during the registration period in the constituency.

But Mr Karani acknowledged the need to be careful about security whilst the election is being carried out.

By-elections have been called, to find a replacement for the jailed former MP Daniel Fa'afanua and for Nathaniel Waena who became the Governor-General in July.
