Solomons to have four foreign provincial police commanders by 2005

Four of the nine provinces in Solomon Islands are to have expatriate police commanders by January.

The Police Minister Michael Maina says Choiseul, Malaita, Temotu and Western Provinces have been targetted for the changes.

Mr Maina says the expatriates would assist in putting authority, discipline and loyalty back into the local police force.

He says the situation would be more attractive for donors with expatriates in the commanding positions.

"We also want to attract some donor support for the rural populace in terms of police service. At the moment we are not doing it because donors do not have confidence in our people at the moment."
