Solomon Islands police minister wants expatriate police commanders

4:24 pm on 4 October 2004

The Solomon Island Police Minister says he wants four of the nine provinces to have expatriate police commanders by January.

Michael Maina says Choiseul, Malaita, Temotu and Western Provinces have been targetted for the changes.

Mr Maina says the expatriates would assist in putting authority, discipline and loyalty back into the local police force.

He says Solomon Islanders wouldn't be able to achieve what the expatriates can.

"It is not possible. We've gone through difficulties in the past where the authority from police in those locations have diminished over the years, mainly because of the Wantok system and other factors and therefore my perception of restoring authority in the police is to bring back expatriates as we have done with the commissioner of police."
