Fiji's prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, will leave for the United States this weekend for a specialist medical check.

The Prime Minister's Office says a recent medical review while Mr Qarase was in New York revealed a narrowing of the blood vessels leading to and from his heart.

The statement says Mr Qarase's condition is not life threatening and his return will depend on his medical check and treatment.

The finance minister, Ratu Jone Kubuabola, will act as prime minister in Mr Qarase's absence.
